INDIANAPOLIS — The growth of academic programs and the development of an impressive array of industry partnerships highlighted Purdue University’s first year in Indianapolis.
At the completion of the inaugural 2024-25 academic year, Purdue’s expansion in the capital city is positioning the university as a catalyst for innovation and economic development in Indiana through strong educational foundations and the development of powerful partnerships with business leaders, while increasing its presence throughout Indianapolis.
The expansion of academic offerings will continue to be a key driver of Purdue’s success in Indianapolis. Over the next two years, the university will introduce at least six new undergraduate and graduate programs — a 46% and 60% increase, respectively, over the current year. These additions are intentionally aligned with high-demand fields that tap into Indianapolis’ and Indiana’s existing strengths, including advanced manufacturing, sports science, construction technology and pharmaceutical engineering.
Connecting, expanding through industry partnerships
Students and graduates in academic programs in Indianapolis will have an advantage in creating direct connections through Purdue’s rapidly growing list of industry partnerships.
The university has cultivated relationships with 55 companies to provide students with internship, co-op, research and career opportunities. These collaborations span sectors like biosciences, tech innovation, pharmaceuticals and engineering, aligning student preparation with employer needs.
This approach reflects a central pillar of Purdue’s strategy for Indianapolis: creating job-ready graduates who are embedded in the local economy and equipped to thrive in tomorrow’s workforce. Companies benefit from access to well-trained and emerging talent, while students gain meaningful, hands-on experience and networking opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom.
“We’re seeing a new type of student applicant — one that covets a Purdue degree but wants a more urban experience that makes it easier to work while they’re in school,” said Dan Hasler, chief operating officer for Purdue in Indianapolis. “We believe that by giving students experience with companies in a major city center, those relationships will make them more likely to stay after graduation, which is one of our primary objectives in helping to promote brain gain, not only for the city but the entire state of Indiana.”
Leveraging Purdue’s history of excellence in early phase discovery with new partnerships in Indianapolis should enable faster movement from discovery to impacts enriching critical areas of society. These discoveries along with the creation of unique, experiential educational experiences for Purdue students will stimulate economic growth in Indiana and opportunities for those industry partners to retain job-ready graduates in the state.
To support this modern reimagining of a university in a major metropolitan area, Purdue has established 10 physical locations across Indianapolis. These include strategic partnerships and shared spaces with industry leaders such as Elanco, Dallara, SpectronRx and many more. Rather than a single hub, Purdue is weaving into the fabric of the city’s innovation and industry corridors, expanding from downtown all the way to the northwest side of Indianapolis.
One Purdue
While building an identity in Indianapolis, Purdue has deepened its connection to West Lafayette. More than 30,000 bus rides on the Campus Connect shuttle were logged between the two locations this year, underscoring the fluid, reciprocal nature of the relationship. Faculty, students and resources from both locations flow freely, allowing everyone to benefit from the full breadth of Purdue’s offerings. The One Purdue model promotes academic unity and leverages the strengths of both locations to create a richer, more flexible learning environment.
Purdue’s innovative programs — such as EPICS, a service-learning design program in which teams of students partner with local and global community organizations to address human, community and environmental needs; Vertically Integrated Projects; and The Data Mine — have been seamlessly integrated from West Lafayette into the Indianapolis location. These initiatives emphasize experiential learning and interdisciplinary collaboration, preparing students to tackle real-world challenges from day one. Their successful deployment signals a strong commitment to educational excellence and relevance in an urban setting.
“Indianapolis brings unique opportunities that we can’t replicate and execute in West Lafayette and vice versa, but this is One Purdue,” said David Umulis, Purdue’s senior vice provost for Indianapolis. “Our students and faculty at both locations can take advantage of tremendous experiential learning, connection and research opportunities while truly enjoying the best of both worlds to further enhance their overall Purdue experience.”
An innovative urban experience
As Purdue closes its first chapter in Indianapolis, the expansion has become more than just a logistical achievement — it is a strategic success story. The university is not only providing innovative experiential education opportunities for students but actively shaping the future workforce of Indiana with trained and job-ready graduates, promoting talent retention and economic development for the city and state. By blending academic rigor with real-world impact and community connection, Purdue is redefining what it means to have a 21st century urban research presence.
With ambitious plans and strong community support, Purdue’s expansion in Indianapolis is poised to grow even further while fostering innovation, empowering students, and strengthening the future of the city and state.
